How to Give a Subcutaneous Injection: Step by Step

A subcutaneous injection (a shot into the fat layer just under your skin) takes about two minutes once you know the steps. Follow this guide and you can do it safely at home.

What Is a Subcutaneous Injection?

A subcutaneous injection goes into the thin layer of fat that sits just under your skin. It does not reach the muscle.

Most peptides are given this way because they absorb steadily from fat tissue. The belly, outer thigh, and back of the upper arm are the most common sites.

What Do You Need Before Giving a Subcutaneous Injection?

Gather everything before opening anything:

Never reuse a needle. A dull or dirty needle causes more pain and raises the risk of infection.

How Do You Give a Subcutaneous Injection, Step by Step?

Step 1: Wash your hands.

Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Dry with a clean towel.

Step 2: Clean the vial top.

Wipe the rubber stopper with a fresh alcohol swab. Let it air-dry for 5 to 10 seconds.

Step 3: Draw the dose.

Pull the plunger back to your dose amount. Insert the needle into the vial. Push the air in, then pull your dose out. Flick the barrel to move any large air bubbles to the top, then push them out slowly until a small drop appears at the tip.

Step 4: Pick your injection site.

The belly, at least two inches from the belly button, is the most forgiving spot. Pinch an inch of skin and fat between your fingers.

Step 5: Insert the needle.

Hold the syringe like a dart. Go in at a 45-degree angle if you have a lean build, or 90 degrees if you have more body fat. Push in with one smooth, confident motion.

Step 6: Inject slowly.

Press the plunger down steadily over 5 to 10 seconds. Rushing causes more discomfort.

Step 7: Remove and apply light pressure.

Pull the needle straight out. Press a clean swab on the spot for a few seconds. Do not rub.

Step 8: Dispose of the needle safely.

Drop it directly into a sharps container. Never recap or place it in regular trash.

Why Should You Rotate Injection Sites?

Injecting the same spot repeatedly builds scar tissue that slows absorption. Rotate through at least three or four different spots.

DoseVault lets you log your injection sites, doses, and schedule in one place, so rotation becomes automatic instead of a guessing game.

Common Questions

Where do you inject subcutaneously?

Common sites are the belly (at least two inches from the belly button), the outer thigh, and the back of the upper arm. Rotate sites each time to avoid scar tissue buildup.

How deep does a subcutaneous needle go?

A subcutaneous needle only reaches the fat layer just under the skin, roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. You are not aiming for muscle.

Does a subcutaneous injection hurt?

Most people feel only a small pinch. Using a short, thin needle (29 to 31 gauge) and injecting slowly cuts discomfort significantly.
